A Guide to Types and Cost of Wheelchair Vans

A van whose interior has been modified to increase space and install a power lift or a wheelchair ramp is known as a wheelchair van.

Features of a Wheelchair Van:

  • Lowered van floor.
  • Seats are removed to make more space available for the wheelchair.
  • Fuel lines are modified and the gas tank is shifted towards the back, in case of side entry. While, in case of a back way entry, the gas tank is pushed towards the front of the car.
  • The suspension is modified to support the extra weight of the wheelchair van.
  • Windows and access doors are installed if required.

Variants of Access

  1. Ramp Based- These are the ones which are most commonly used. There are the portable ramps which do not need any sort of modification to the van. A variation to such ramps is fold up or in-floor ramps. These can be either manual or motorized. However, the portable ramps are far cheaper than the fold up or in-floor ramps.
  2. Powered Lift Based- A platform is placed on the side or back of the van. The wheelchair is placed on the platform, which is then raised by means of a lift.

Cost of a Wheelchair Van:

Side modification is usually more expensive than rear modifications but they are recommended.  Powered lifts can also be added but are limited to 300 kgs. These modifications can cost more than $20,000, depending on what you want to do.

Alternative Option:

If the cost of modifications is steep for someone, they can opt to buy a used wheelchair van. One can expect to buy a van along with the necessary pieces of equipment for a sum of around $20,000. Depending upon your financial backup opt for the wheelchair van that suits you best.
